NACURH!

What is NACURH?

NACURH is the National Association of College and University Residence Halls.   It is the largest run student organization in the world.  NACURH is the large umbrella for the National Residence Hall Honorary, and the the 8 regions of the U.S., and the NIC wich is the National Information Center.  There is a board of directors that are refered to as the NBD (National Board of Directors).  The regions are GLACURH (Great Lakes Association of College and University Residence Halls), MACURH, PACURH, SWACURH, SAACURH, IACURH, CACURH.NEACURH.  They are all governed by a RBD (Regional Board of Directors).

NACURH and me?

When I enrolled at Ball State University I had no prior knowledge of NACURH. During my hall council meetings at Botsford & Swinford Halls our RHA (Residence Hall Association) Representative talked about it during the fall semester.  She told us that Ball State was planning on bidding for the conference for the summer of '97.   She also informed us that they were looking for some student leaders that wanted to get involved with the planning of the conference.  I was young and ready to get involved, so in October of '95 I filled out an application to join the NACURH '97 Bid Team as a corporate sponsorship chair.  My friend Becky Snyder also applied and the team decided to appoint us both to serve as co-chairs.

We spent the whole year planning the conference as if we were going to have it so we could present our proposal to the NBD to be awarded the conference.  We went to NACURH '96 in May and we were awarded the conference for the following summer.  We had one year to iron out everything and make it all work.

This was a great experience for me. We had over 2,500 student leaders from across the U.S. and Canada attend the conference which was themed after the Indianapolis 500 which was held the same weekend in May.  "Setting the Pace" was the theme that transported Ball State University into a raceway for student developement.   Serving as Corporate Sponsorship Co-Chairs we were responsible for working witht eh corporate parteners of NACURH which at the time were, CFR (Campus Fund Raisers), Micro-Fridge, (which changed to Interion), and also OCM (On-Campus Marketing), and other local and national businesses to obtain financial support and also the support of services and products.  The conference had a budget of 500,000 dollars.

It was a lot of fun expericence that I will carry with me for the rest of my life as well as the friendships that I have gained.
